Polish Consulate Says Jewish Groups Called To Oppose Historian
NEW YORK -- Two major American Jewish organizations helped block a prominent New York University historian from speaking at the Polish consulate here last week, saying the academic was too critical of Israel and American Jewry.
The historian, Tony Judt, is Jewish and directs New York University's Remarque Institute, which promotes the study of Europe. Judt was scheduled to talk Oct. 4 to a nonprofit organization that rents space from the consulate. Judt's subject was the Israel lobby in the United States, and he planned to argue that this lobby has often stifled honest debate.
Sure, Dr. Judt is persona non grata with the American Jewish establishment becuase he is sharply critical of the State of Israel. But even the Israelis are more mature than the American Jewish establishment, after all the Zionist newspaper Ha'aretz had no problem printing an article by the good doctor.
Why do these self-appointed "guardians" of Jewish America feel the need to stifle debate about the State of Israel? Id it becuase they know that the case for Israel is weaker than they are willing to admit publically?

Try not to let it discourage you too much, though. Yours is obviously a minority opinion in the Jblogosphere, but minority opinions are important too, maybe more so.

I think this has more to do with AIPAC and their lot attempting to monopolize public discussion of Israel among American Jews despite the fact that most American Jews, while supporting Israel, are far less hawkish about it. But they are well funded and very loud, and they can silence most Jewish critics by playing the group solidarity card. I've commented elsewhere that they're like the American Jewish equivalent of the Muslim Council of Britain in that respect. Except that they're actually wealthy and powerful whereas the MCB is only annoying.
Speaking of 'elsewhere' in discussing AIPAC, it seems that George Soros may be trying to organize a more progressive American Jewish lobby organization. I don't have the original story but it's been discussed on my favorite MidEastNorthAfrica blog.
Meanwhile keep up the good work! I don't think we're the only two Jews who would prefer to have got Long Island in the '47 partition...
I agree with you. Tony Judt is not very different from the way Jewish left wing inteleectuals were in the 60's in the style of The NY Review of Books. He is far from being anti-Jewish or systemically anti-American like Chomsky.
